Abstract
English proficiency has become a cornerstone of modern military operations, enabling effective communication, fostering international cooperation, and enhancing operational success in multinational missions. This paper examines the evolving landscape of military English language education, focusing on current trends, persistent challenges, and the critical role of language skills in fostering interoperability and cultural competence. Drawing on case studies from NATO, the U.S. military, and the Australian Defence Force, the study highlights successful programs while identifying gaps in resource allocation, accessibility, and the integration of military-specific language training. Key findings reveal that while technological advancements and standardized frameworks like NATO’s STANAG 6001 have improved language education, disparities in proficiency levels and cultural awareness persist, particularly among non-English-speaking and lower-ranking personnel. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research and practice, emphasizing the need for tailored curricula, scalable e-learning solutions, and a stronger focus on the intersection of language and cultural competence. By addressing these challenges, military English language education can better equip personnel for the complexities of 21st-century multinational operations, ultimately enhancing global security and diplomatic relations.
