Abstract
In an era defined by multinational coalitions, asymmetric warfare, and humanitarian interventions, language proficiency has emerged as a critical competency for military personnel. The ability to communicate across linguistic and cultural boundaries is no longer a peripheral skill but a strategic asset, directly impacting mission success, civilian safety, and international collaboration (Johnson, 2021). For instance, NATO’s interoperability standards mandate that personnel achieve Level 3 proficiency in partner languages to facilitate joint operations, yet gaps persist due to inconsistent training outcomes (NATO Standardization Office, 2022). Historically, military language education has relied on instructor-led classroom methods, which, while structured, struggle to meet the scalability, flexibility, and contextual relevance demanded by modern conflict zones. Technology-enhanced language learning (TELL), however, offers transformative potential through immersive simulations, adaptive algorithms, and mobile platforms. This paper explores how TELL tools address the unique challenges of military language education, while also interrogating the institutional and technological barriers to their adoption.
