Abstract
First language (L1) acquisition studies have evoked a significant deal of research in
both linguistic and cognitive science. A relatively good number of studies have
been conducted over the past decades to illuminate how L1 or child language
acquisition mechanism takes place. Accordingly, the present review aimed at
exploring the mechanisms children rely on as they acquire language, how they go
through the developmental stages, and how continuity and change go hand in hand
in L1 acquisition.
